The Beijing Olympic torch is about 72 centimeters (28.3 inches) long and weighs 985 grams (2.17 pounds). It holds its flame for approximately 15 minutes. The torch is made of recycled materials and uses environmentally friendly fuels - exemplifying the Olympics focus on being 'green'. The design of the torch was inspired by cloud formations, which are a long-standing symbol of luck in Chinese culture. The bright red and shiny silver colors used in the torch make its elegant design stand out even more.
On October 24, 2007, Beijing Olympic Committee announced the timetable of 2008 Olympic torch relay. According to the timetable, the torch relay will begin in Olympia on March 24th under the theme 'Journey of Harmony'. Shortly after the race begins, the torch will be passed in Athens, the Olympic city of 2004. The torch will return to the Beijing Olympic Committee in Athens on March 30th.
The torch will be relayed in 21 cities of five continents outside of China under its motto, 'Light the Passion, Share the Dream'. The international relay will begin on April 1st and continue until May 3rd. From May 4th onwards, the torch will march in 113 domestic cities and regions, including Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. Finally, it will arrive in Beijing on August 6, and will be lit in the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics on August 8th. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Torch will cover a total distance of around 137,000 kilometers (85,128 miles) on its 130-day relay, which will stand as the longest route with the most torchbearers covering the widest range in Olympic history.
